John Carpenter Offers To Score Bong Joon Ho's New Horror Film.
Bong Joon Ho has announced that his next movie, following his already completed animated film involving sea creatures, will be a horror movie set underground in a Seoul Subway station. Right after that, he confirmed that the master of horror and scores himself - John Carpenter, will be scoring this horror film.
On March 22nd, John Carpenter and Joon Ho did a 4k screening of 'The Thing', capped off by a Q&A held by Ho. While the writer/director was detailing this horror film, Carpenter pretty quickly before Ho could even officially ask the question, replied "I wanna do your score'. This was set in stone by a nice firm handshake, and Joon Ho insists and confirms this is real, and 'officially happening'.
Though not much has been released about what the film will be about, Joon Ho made it clear this movie has been on his mind for decades, somewhat of a passion/life project. In 2020 Joon Ho mentioned this idea in an interview saying it will be a Korean film, set in Seoul, with unique elements of horror and action,”. Personally I love my horror with some intense action, Train To Busan is a great example of a horror movie with some pretty beautiful and impressive action scenes.
Joon Ho's current catalogue of films only includes one actual horror movie, 'The Host' from 2006, which was a great monster movie based in Seoul. Though not a horror film, his 2019 movie 'Parasite' was a great Thriller with some super dark comedy, portraying greed and class discrimination.
This is definitely some exciting news considering this will be Carpenter's first score since 2022's 'Halloween Ends', which received mixed reviews at best, with most leaning negative - though I personally really enjoyed that one. Carpenter of course cemented his legacy through the classics like 'Halloween', 'The Thing', 'Escape From New York', and one of my favorites of his: The Stephen King classic, 'Christine'.
Who's ready for the Master's return?
