"I'M PISSED NOW!": The announcement of Evil Dead Burn.
The famous line screamed by a roided out Lex Luger was the first thing to hit my mind when I heard the news that just broke. For those not familiar, I'll leave the infamous clip below.
Not long after Evil Dead Rise was released, the next director to be given a shot at the series was announced as Sébastien Vaniček. He was about to make his directorial debut with a movie called "Infested", streaming now on Shudder. As someone who loves Evil Dead more than anything, who HATED Evil Dead Rise, I couldn't wait to see Infested. I was very happy to report I liked it too! It was a really gross movie about a spider infestation in a high rise building. I couldn't wait to hear more news about his upcoming entry.
Welp. We got that news today. Vaniček revealed what looks to be a script for his Evil Dead entry slated for 2026. The title? Evil Dead Burn.... Now... This is why "I'm pissed now.". This movie is an original story, it's own thing, separate from other movies in the franchise. SO WHY IS IT USING THE SAME NAMING CONVENTION?! That personally drives me nuts.
What I hated about Evil Dead Rise was how insistent on making references to past movies it was. Rise felt like a generic exorcism movie that managed to get the rights to slap Evil Dead on it last minute. Anything that felt even remotely like an Evil Dead movie was the references. The cabin in the beginning, check. The "vine" scene despite being in a highrise miles away from vines, check. The eye pop from Evil Dead 2, check. And don't even get me started on that Cheese Grater scene that could have passed in a PG-13 movie. You want to see what a cheese grater scene is capable of, check out the clip from Boy Kills World... THAT is brutal. As a matter of fact, let me leave it here and you can see how badass a cheese grater scene can be... And a hard R rated cheese grater scene.. I particularly note the sound design in this scene, how gross that bad boy sounds scraping across those bad guys.
Now that I got all of that out of my system.. The bottom line is - I'm still going to see Evil Dead Burn, despite the incredibly boring and lame as hell name which comes off a little uncreative and lazy. I'm still rooting for Vaniček. I really am. Trust me, I want a GOOD Evil Dead movie. I still feel like it could be good, of course, it's just a title after all right?
Evil Dead Burn, 2026... I do believe in you, Vaniček. Please save this franchise from the mediocrity and laziness of Rise.
That will end todays worried rant. I love Evil Dead.
